Kathleen Edwards: Back To Me

Talented singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards is back to her spunky self on this excellent sophomore release. The rootsy rocker is in fine form on spirited songs like the infectious title track and the biting "What Are You Waiting For?" and does equally well on lovely ballads like "Away." She channels Being There-era Wilco on a horn-infused cover of fellow Ottawa songwriter Jim Bryson's "Somewhere Else" and nails the morose, jilted lover bit with both "In State" and "Copied Keys."

With Colin Cripps at the helm, Back to Me possesses a certain sheen that reigns in contribution from the likes of My Morning Jacket's Jim James and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench, not to mention Edwards' own wild side. All in all though, Cripps' heavy hand might be for the best, rendering Edwards at her most radio-ready and accessible. While a song like "Good Things" does little to dispel any comparisons to Sarah Harmer, for the most part Back to Me reveals Edwards' maturity, as she comes into her own as both a vocalist and a writer.
