Kathleen Edwards: Back To Me

anyone with a weakness for the earthy, literate tunes and plaintive wail of lucinda williams, the unvarnished, unsettling character studies of aimee mann or the rootsy simplicity of sheryl crow will immediately fall for edwards, whose sophomore album bears traces of all three influences. that said, she's also blessed with a distinctive vision and voice, particularly when recounting such tough-love tales as in state, the crime-time prequel to six o'clock news from her impressive failer debut. although a sameness tends to plague some tracks, the canadian singer/songwriter almost always conjures a comforting country-folk melody and spins an engaging yarn in a voice that can be vulnerable one moment and seductive the next, and as wounded as it is defiant.
