Kathleen Edwards:  Building 55

for a 21-year-old, she's sure got a smoky voice. smoky, like, some day i'll be breathing through a tube in my throat smoky. if you can get over that visual, it's beautiful and sexy and drowsy and maybe it's early morning breath-y instead. the theme of bitterness recurs in "big star" and "titled untitled," and her songs are well-written and i really love her guitar sounds and rhythms. for a while, i played this CD as much as i was hooked on gentleman reg. such clever phrasing, such real originality in her voice. even the brief "violin for mom" had some of that ache. there's some big twang at times in the electric guitar, a touch of violin, and a full band with drums, piano, bass, electric guitars. the production is a fine thing, multi-layered and yet spare and clear. folk music for the young punk kids.
