Solid debut kathleen edwards comes from canada as a female neil young in the year 2003, with a collection of ten songs that without effort seduce you with strong lyrics, great melodies and a toned down, but extremely present voice. the arrangements have a base of new-wave country, but are otherwise powered with everything from electric guitar à la crazy horse to gliding steel guitar and dark bass. with a feeling like a lucinda williams, edards takes you into her landscape. one of the songs she calls "one more song the radio won't like". this is definitely songs with such a strong personal touch that she doesn't exactly falls into the commercial world of pop. instead she follows her fellow countrymen neil young, joni mitchell, leonard cohen, cowboy junkies and more into the great history of rock music in canada. rating: 5 [out of 6] fredrik wagrup dagbladet.no translated by suzanna |
