USA Today:  Failer

edwards is the kind of young artist most rock critics fantasize about: a rootsy minstrel who pens moody hard-luck tales and delivers them in a frayed, grainy voice that invites comparisons to alt-country favorite lucinda williams or a female neil young. but grit alone does not a great singer/songwriter make, and despite the glowing notices that "failer" is predictably raking in, the cd is inconsistent. vaguely haunted tracks such as "lone wolf" and "hockey skates" reveal glimmers of bittersweet lyricism, but other songs seem willfully droopy and just plain dull. edwards' blend of sulking and stripped-down sass may make her a natural press darling, but my guess is she'll need to convey more energy and emotional range to appeal to the folks who actually buy albums.
