CD review: Bon Iver dampens Kathleen Edwards" new album

Kathleen Edwards, a 33-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter, should have become a star with her brilliant and evocative 2008 album "Asking for Flowers" - but didn't. But there"s a chance that her new album, " Voyageur ," might get more attention, because the album was co-produced by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame, the black sheep of the 2012 Grammys. (The couple have also been romatically linked.) With the lyricism of Lucinda Williams and a voice reminiscent of Sheryl Crow, Edwards" new album features more keyboard and a more layered sound (thanks to Vernon) but lacks the rootsy, stripped-down beauty that "Flowers" possessed. It"s still a strong record but feels as if she is reined in by the arrangements. Edwards needs to let loose.
