2005/04/28 Debaser; Stockholm, Sweden walpurgis night in stockholm seems to be synonymous with kathleen edwards. the 26-year-old canadian visited sweden for the first time on walpurgis night two years ago, and this thursday, two days before, it was time again. it can become a yearly tradition, if you ask me. the ones of us who paid a visit to södra teatern remember a magical spring night two years ago. among the audience of debaser there were surely a lot of people who witnessed the dainty canadian live for the first time. i have a hard time believeing that anyone was disappointed. with another great record behind her, one month old "back to me", kathleen edwards hit the stage and explained how happy she was to be back in sweden. that kind of talk rarely backfires. it didn't exactly matter that she started with a brilliantly beautiful "pink emerson radio" which at least got me to understand what an amazing song that is. kathleen edwards' music has room for so much. at times it's incredibly beautiful, and in the next moment it's pushy and cheeky and then it's laidback. it basically works without getting bad. this night at a clearly well-filled debaser it's the music that speaks. we don't get a lot of the cunning banter, also one of kathleen edwards' strong sides. but sometimes she also makes you laugh. the peaks are many and they are high. "pink emerson radio" has already been mentioned, "summerlong" fits like a glove which also goes for the "oldies" "six o'clock news" and 'The lone wolf". the end of the regular set with "what are you waiting for?" and "one more song the radio won't like" is as heavy as lead. when the applause makes her come in and play once more she treats us with "somewhere else" in a fantastic duet with the songwriter jim bryson. in the beginning of the song kathleen edwards cracks up in a huge smile. we have the exact same feeling, us who have once more seen her set stockholm on fire. jonas solberger revolver.nu translated by suzanna |
