Doesn't stick

Audience: about 100
Best: Sure as shit
Worst: Traditional and a bit boring

Canadian Kathleen Edwards offered a fairly flat show in Stenhammarsalen on Monday night.

Before the final song, Kathleen Edwards looks down at the front row, points to a woman in a black and white dress and introduces her as Suzanna. A Swedish fan who started a fansite about Kathleen Edwards, the only one of it's kind.

Suzanna gets lots of love, picks a song and then heads out to help Kathleen sell some records. Internet and cooperation across all borders when it's at it's best. And a big reason that the basically unknown Canadian singer/songwriter Kathleen Edwards has 100 people in attendance in Gothenburg on a Monday night.

This fine little story is unfortunately the only thing that really sticks when I walk out the doors of Konserthuset. It seems that Kathleen Edwards, alone with a guitar, is basically the same as many other artists alone with a guitar. Traditional American rootsmusic, songs about hometowns and moving North and opening a store, a worn Gibson J-45 hung over the shoulder and constant tries to connect with the voice. It's ok, competent, but never really, really in your face. Furthermore, it's fairly bland at the beginning and with songs that sound the same.

It gets better towards the end, especially in the song Sure As Shit. A moving love song which Kathleen's mother didn't like the title of, but that contents-wise has all the ingredients that Kathleen too often lacks.

Rating: 2 out of 5
