Edwards was on

Speaking of hockey songs, Kathleen Edwards popped a few of those into her stunning set at the Rex on Saturday.

The Ottawa singer-songwriter is a favorite in Pittsburgh and she's been here a number of times, but this one was different as she turned up for an acoustic show with just an accompanist on guitar and keyboards.

Although it didn't rock as much, of course, the setting, with everyone seated at the Rex, was a better showcase for her gorgeous drawl and narrative lyrics, not to mention her occasionally potty-mouthed banter. Edwards has obviously learned a few things from guitar-playing husband Colin Cripps, because, when she was alone on stage, she went beyond strumming to spike the songs with delicate fingerpicking mixed with blasts of reverb.

The set list ranged from the haunting lament "Alicia Ross" to assertive-girl songs 'The Cheapest Key" and "Hockey Skates" to her fun cover of the Outfield's "I Don't Want to Lose Your Love Tonight."

Playing the night before the Super Bowl, she left the stage saying, "I hope you win!"
