2009/08/06 Edmonton Folk Music Festival; Edmonton, AB ... The checkered shirt quotient for the night was filled up by Kathleen Edwards" band. Hamilton"s pride and joy also brought the rock - sometimes funny, as with the hockey themed I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory, sometimes desperate, like In State - favouring a loping, minor-key sound made darker by her smoky voice and the distinctive leads of guitarist Colin Cripps. She likely would have been better served by later scheduling - in a club setting, Edwards and Cripps can rip it up unmercifully - but they acquitted themselves nicely. Steve Earle took the mood down dramatically, armed with just acoustic guitar and harmonica. By now an expected festival addition, Earle - seen off to the side enjoying Edwards" performance - can often appear a little cranky onstage. ... Tom Murray Edmonton Journal |
