2010/07/20 Calvin Theatre; Northampton, MA Alejandro Escovedo and Kathleen Edwards are frequently labeled 'alt-country' artists, but when they shared a co-bill at the Calvin Theatre in Northampton, Mass., Tuesday night, they both got down to some serious rocking. And while the theater was not even close to full, those fortunate enough to attend may have witnessed one of the best double lineups of the year. Backed by a four-piece band that included her husband Colin Cripps on guitar, Edwards started the night off with a strong version of the mid-tempo rocker "I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory." From there Edwards, who hails from Canada, played a near 90-minute set that mixed country tinged ballads. Highlights included a surprise appearance by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, who played electric guitar and blended his voice beautifully with Edwards during the lovely, "Mercury" and a stirring version of the ballad "Hockey Skates." Edwards and the boys sounded like a rough bar band during the set closer "Back to Me" and ended with a three-song encore that included the crowd requested "Buffalo." ...
