The heiress of Neil Young doesn't want to be interpreted literally

the music magazine rolling stone has named her one of the ten artists to watch this year. her comfortable voice to countryrockcomp has caused a smaller hype in the press. she has been compared to stacey earle, gillian welch, lucinda williams and her fellow countryman neil young's crazy horse.
when i call her up in a hotel room in canada she has just woken up. there are some yawns before we come to the texts on the album "failer".
there are a lot of references to drugs, melancholy, depression, texts about women who sleep with married men, about bars as living rooms and the everlasting drinking: going down in the same old bar and i don't even order anymore/i am so sick of consequence and the look on your face" ("hockey skates") or "i was thinking about drinking my way through the day" ("12 bellevue") or "i sleep through most days/so the time goes by/and i think i drink more now than ever" ("sweet little duck").

- my songs are definitely personal but the lyrics are sometimes cryptic and not necessarily self-experienced. but come on, most 24-year-olds hang out at bars and party a lot.
- the parts about alcohol are more about people and different characters, not necessarily about alcohol but more about their way of life.

what's the most stupid thing you've done when you've been drunk?
- besides driving drunk, which was stupid, i remember one time at a folk festival in north america where everything was serious with a lot of conservative people and the straight opposite to party. there i got totally wasted and spotted a gigantic inflatable beercan which i started bouncing against continuously. i made a giant ass of myself, says kathleen edwards.
her mother has tried to analyze what her daughter's saying in her songs for a year now.
- she's the type who all the time is looking for hidden meanings and has tried to find something about her, haha. but the parents are proud and like the record.

has she found anything?
- no, but she's still struggling and sometimes asks, but i don't tell her very much.
kathleen edwards grew up in switzerland, suoth korea and her birthplace ottawa in canada.
- of course it was terrible to try and get new friends every time we moved. i was only 13 when we moved to korea so that was hard. but it's also exciting getting to see so much. a lot of people my age haven't even been outside of canada.
in 1999 she released an ep and in the fall of 2000 she set up her own tour and drove around canada herself.
- at times i was even a street musician.
when "failer" was released in 2002 there were a lot of praise, something kathleen edwards wasn'texpecting.
- but when i was in new york on 'The late show with david letterman", the clubs where i played in ottawa were still not crowded. it takes a longer time for canadians to get excited about me.
